Staff Spotlight Arielle Paist - Heart Math Tutoring

Staff Spotlight Arielle Paist - Heart Math Tutoring Staff Spotlight: Arielle Paist Staff Spotlight: Arielle Paist February 3, 2017 Arielle, a Charlotte native, graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a B.A. in Business Administration where she completed over 2,000 hours of service for a variety of non-profit organizations. Serving the community ignited her interest and charged her with mending the array of social indifferences. After graduation, she embarked on a Tutor Corp fellowship in Newark, New Jersey at Great Oaks Charter School. This fellowship strengthened her dedication to advocating for all students. Arielle believes widening opportunities and closing the educational gap is critical. Arielle is currently the Program Coordinator at Nathaniel Alexander, a school she attended as an elementary student. She loves being a part of this school community once again and is committed to ensuring her students make strong academic progress. Here are Arielles answers to our Spotlight questions: Who was your best teacher and why? My favorite teacher, who taught me in fifth grade at Nathaniel Alexander, was Ms. Cook! As with our Heart volunteers, she not only supported me academically but was a motivating mentor as well. I was new to CMS curriculum, as I had recently relocated from California. With her assistance I not only began to see how my hard work and effort could positively affect my grades, but also what higher horizons I could reach for. She was a true believer in pushing you to your limits, in order to surpass them. I am thankful, as it groomed me into the college graduate and woman I am today! Whatis yourfavoritebook? I love cracking open a book and reading in silence; it brings me so much peace! Although I enjoy many different genres, recently my favorites are ones written by Nicholas Sparks. I live for romantic novels with an action twist! What is yourfavorite quote? “Beauty is as beauty does. We’re remembered not by what we looked like, but how we behaved and changed the lives of others.” Whats an interesting fact about yourself? I was named after the little mermaid, Ariel. My grandma had long red hair, so seeing that the character was always a favorite of my mother’s she thought it was very fitting.

The Sympathy Card

The Sympathy Card Photo from Oprah.com via Google It is a very common and humanistic trait to seek sympathy.   Sympathy is given when others feel sorry for another person because of some sort of occurrence that has happened in their lives.   Sympathy is related to hardships and a person who has overcome hardships is often a respected person, and most people want to be respected and seen as a strong individual.   It is perfectly acceptable to share your experiences with others and to express feelings, longings and trials, but it feels as though “playing the sympathy card” is becoming overused. There is a lot more to be said about a person who does not feel the need to share all their trials because everyone has a story and everyone has at least some sort of trial they have faced in their lives.   Of course, certain people have experienced more unfortunate events than others, but every human being faces some sort of struggle.   Some may experience death of loved ones or poverty while others biggest problems may be fighting with their parents.     Obviously not all issues in life are equal.   But I think the most attractive and brave characteristic a person can have is the humility to not seek sympathy for hardships.   Understanding that, yes, I have had to overcome certain obstacles but yet having the strength to contain the desire inside to want to tell everyone to invoke sympathy.   I am not saying to never share your emotions or feeling, but there is a time and a place to do so and social media sites and in every topic of conversation are not those places.   The stronges t people don’t want sympathy for their hardships but rather respect for how they choose to handle it.   Respect is given to people who don’t wallow in self-pity and go about their lives with a positive attitude.   Isn’t it much more pleasant to be around people who have a passion for life and who are hospitable to others and not absorbed in their own lives. An example of the overused sympathy card was clearly demonstrated in both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.   It is a great annoyance to me when politicians try to say this overused line, “We didn’t have much but what we did have was a goal/dream”.   Yes that is endearing and I am sure that the road it took them to get where they are was not easy, but the sympathy appeal to the middle class that they are trying to get at is not effective because that story is so overused.   There are certain ways of making personal anecdotes effective in speeches, but when it is just simply trying to show that they are “one of us” it comes off as insincere and as though they are trying too hard.   It is difficult to pull off the sympathy card because it is so overused.   That sort of appeal to human emotions may have worked years ago but now, in the political world, it is extremely irritating for politicians to try to get that sympathy when their main focus should be why v oting for them is better than voting for the other guy.   It’s simple and clear but yet so apparently difficult to do because of the inherent desire humans have to get sympathy.

Android vs. iPhone for College Students

Android vs. iPhone for College Students Photo via Flickr user mujitra There are many brands, types and models of smartphones and tablets on the market right now. While the iPhone may be a smartphone giant of sorts, Android phones are plentiful, varied and in many cases, much cheaper than the Apple tycoons branded smartphone. For the average college student, here is a guide to deciding which operating system is best for you! User-friendliness Do you want to pick up a phone and be able to easily understand how to use it? The iPhone is probably for you â€" all you do is tap on the icon you want from your Home screen and press the Home button to return to that screen. The comfort of an iPhone is that its exactly the same as everyone elses â€" simple, clean and easy to use. Android devices can differ from phone to phone â€" different buttons, screen sizes, shapes, unlock screens, etc. The home screen differs from phone to phone and brand to brand. Android can definitely make a first-time user scratch their head as to where to find everything. Your Computer Are you all about the creativity and exploration of a Windows PC, or the carefully secure Apple interface? If youre a uber-customizer who loves to get down to the nitty gritty of your electronics, then Android is probably a more satisfying choice for you. If you want to not have to worry about your device and sync it with your Mac easily, then an iOS may be more suited towards your lifestyle â€" Apple makes sure that the iPhone integrated seamlessly with Macs. Photo via Flickr user johanl Do you hate Windows for the vulnerability to Trojans, spyware and malware? Android is probably not for you; the open-source development makes Android almost as vulnerable as Windows itself. If youre savvy on not clicking that Youve won an Amazon gift card! link and being smart about what apps you download, then youre probably set to go with Android. Also, if youre a Google user, highly invested in Gmail, Google Docs and Calendar, Android integrates quite seamlessly. I know that for me, an overly busy college student, Google makes my life much simpler, and having that Android integration really, really helps. Memory Your smartphone is used to download apps, store photos, music, video, etc. If you have too many of those, your smartphone slows down significantly.  The iPhone has great internal memory size options that you can choose at purchase. Android phones tend to have much less internal memory, unless youre looking at high-end Android phones like the Galaxy SIII. However, most Android smartphones come equipped with an SD card slot to add tons of extra memory. The iPhone does not have this capability.  The SD card is relatively cheap and removable, which exposes your data to possible corruption if handled improperly, while the iPhones purely internal memory is almost incorruptible. Personally, I prefer taking the card out, plugging it into my computer and being able to drag-and-drop, delete or add files wherever I want. The SD Card functions as a USB drive in this way. The iPhone needs a cable to sync up to my computer and iTunes to transfer music. I cant drag-and-drop any files. Photo via Flickr user sidduz Apps Lets be honest, touchscreens arent the only reason we love smartphones. Apps from Evernote to Angry Birds make our lives easier and less stressful, and for a college student, offer an escape from (or a focus on!) the world around them. With an iPhone, all app downloads go through the App Store. Each app is approved, controlled and monitored; some apps are rejected before they can hit the store. This makes the iPhone very secure. The App Store on iOS also has more apps than the Android Google Play Store, due to a much older, more prevalent market. Androids app market, through the Google Play Store, is a free-for-all, download-at-own-risk platform. However, with the SD card capabilities, you can also access the file system directly from your phone and  sideload apps from the SD card, all without jailbreaking the phone. Developers experiment more with their apps, with the freedom to do whatever they want. Cost Heres the cold hard truth: the iPhone 5 (16GB) starts at $199 with a mobile plan. Android phones often come for free with a mobile plan. Lets add up the other costs: if you want to upgrade the storage or get a new battery for your sputtering iPhone, you have to get a NEW iPhone. Android? You can just get a new SD card or battery on Amazon or at your local Best Buy. The security of iPhone due to Apples Apple knows best mentality comes with a literal price. Buying an iPhone or an Android phone isnt simple. Some people value certain things more than others. Whats most important to you in a smartphone? Tell us what phone you use, and why you love or hate it!

4 Reasons Students Dont Adjust Well to an AP Class

4 Reasons Students Dont Adjust Well to an AP Class 4 Reasons Students Dont Adjust Well to an AP Class 4 Reasons Students Dont Adjust Well to an AP Class Many students are now starting to take Advanced Placement (AP)  classes in the 10th grade. Its a lot to ask a 15-year-old to be able to handle college coursework but, with admissions requirements getting stricter by the year, many students decide this is the right path for them. However, most students dont adjust well at this age. Theyve only just transitioned to high school the year before and are now essentially in college half of the day. Although students can be prosperous with diligent study and the help of a study group or tutor, there are several reasons why they may not be initially successful. Its a good idea for students and their families to take a look at these reasons so they can make adjustments where necessary. 1. AP courses give homework on  weekends and holidays Most teachers who run an AP class will give out homework on weekends and holidays. Although students think this is simply to fill all their free time, the reality is that the teacher has a certain amount of material they have to get through. For the most part, this can only be done if students do an independent study on their free days. AP students should expect to do a lot of reading, annotations, and formula review during the weekend on a regular basis. In college, students might have long range due dates or several hours in between classes to work on assignments. They will also have developed better time management skills and study habits at this point in their education. A 10th grader taking AP courses will be expected to have these skills five years earlier (READ: Ask a Nerd! Grades and AP Class). 2.  Assignments in AP courses are much more time consuming In addition to reading and review, AP courses are more time consuming in general. Rather than read a short passage and answer 10 questions, students will generally read an entire text and answer 50 questions. In addition to regular course material teachers have to cover what will be on the actual AP exam in the spring. This means more time in class discussing the assignments (rather than doing them),  which leaves students to their own devices to finish. Because high school students are used to short range due dates (generally between one day and one week) they are not used to self enforced time management. This is another major reason for maladjustment to an Advanced Placement class. 3. There are few second chances High school students enrolled in typical courses will often get a second chance here and there. For instance, if they misunderstood a deadline they may be given a brief extension. Also, if the entire class performed poorly on an exam, the teacher may curve it or disregarded it altogether. On the other hand, AP courses held at the college level will have very few second chances. Students are expected to approach the teacher with any questions or concerns and, if they dont, its assumed they know all of the procedures of the assignment and class in general. For someone in their middle teens, this is quite a responsibility (READ: Ask a Nerd! Taking the AP Exam). 4. Students will be expected to use their critical thinking skills to the max In addition to being organized and proactive in an AP course, students will be expected to use their critical thinking skills on a regular basis. When looking at a particular assignment, students will be expected to understand the context, background information of any author or text, advanced formulas that can be applied to a math or science course, and problem solving with content as well as organization. Because a 15 or 16 year old’s mind is still growing, this may be extra difficult at this stage. In short Although there are many ways first time AP students can fall by the wayside, they can still be successful if they have enough help. They can work with a parent or tutor to get heavily organized. They can also work with their teacher, a study group, or tutor to focus on the content. There are lots of resources available to AP students but they do have to go out and search for them. Struggling in your AP classes? Volunteer Reading Tutoring Programs - Why They Can Improve Your Childs Academic Achievement

Volunteer Reading Tutoring Programs - Why They Can Improve Your Child's Academic AchievementWhen you are volunteering for a school or organization, your students will appreciate the experience of participating in the volunteer reading tutoring programs. For many, reading is one of the most challenging things in life, and is an important skill to learn. Whether you are preparing for college or higher education classes, or you just want to have some extra practice for fun, reading can help keep you on track. In many cases, students will need extra help with reading. The books they receive from their parents may not be enough to meet the demands of their grade level, which can cause frustration and even decreased grades. If this sounds like you, consider the time and effort you will save by volunteering your time in the classroom. Most volunteer reading tutoring programs will have some sort of activity to improve students' comprehension skills. This may include discussion groups for both students and teachers. Another method is to have a quiz before each reading activity so that students can prepare ahead of time.Sometimes, teachers will take this additional time and energy to help students who need it the most. This is one reason why a volunteer reading tutor may be able to increase your grades. But, why not take the extra time to teach your child to read? There are other benefits, as well.A child's self-esteem is linked directly to his or her literacy. Teaching a child how to read can greatly improve their self-esteem, which can translate into increased confidence, which in turn can result in a better attitude. In fact, self-esteem is one of the best ways to boost one's academic performance, as it can be used as a tool to motivate a student's study habits.Since children tend to become less confident as they get older, it's very important to correct this problem early. A reading tutor can help you do just that. There are many resources available online that you can use to help boost your child's confidence and enthusiasm. These resources will show you strategies that you can use with your child in order to help them achieve a more positive outlook. So, whether you are just starting to learn to read or you have been struggling with it for years, getting some extra help will be beneficial to you and your child. It doesn't matter if you are doing it to help with your own learning, or if you're participating in a book club or other activity that you enjoy. Just be sure to participate when you have the opportunity.

Pottery Classes London

Pottery Classes London Finding Pottery Courses in London ChaptersParade Mews PotteryShirley Stewart Pottery CoursesCeramics Studio CooperativeThe Clay RoomCrown Works PotteryAt first blush, this task seems unequal to mighty search engines: what can't you find in London would be a better challenge for them.Thinking in those terms overlooks the salient point of the question: true, you can find anything with the right GPS coordinates and proper directions. The question is: would what you find be exactly what you’re looking for?Our capital city has it all: history and cosmopolitanism, tradition and modernism, bureaucracy and art...Generally, one thinks of science as the ‘opposite’ of art â€" think of the phrase ‘arts and science’ that is generally used to represent a balance of extremes, especially in academia. However, giving the matter deeper thought, one must conclude that science and art both require a great deal of imagination and creativity, whereas bureaucracy... doesn’t.Regardless, London has plenty of extremes and lots of ar t (and bureaucracy) to enjoy. One art form in particular that does involve a bit of science is ceramics. Or pottery, if you wish to hold us to this article’s title.Essentially, there is little difference between ceramics and pottery; they are both produced with the same materials, clays, and undergo the same processes:Shaping the clay body: forming it into whichever shape you desire; vases, cups... even stoneware dishes.Firing: placing the clay body into a kiln once the clay has driedGlazing: coating the clay body in a shiny, protective coatingRe-firing: exposure to the intense heat of a gas kiln or electric kiln ensures the glaze is bonded to the clay body at the molecular level.Taking the clinical approach, as we have here, there appears to be little mystery to being a clay artist but the art of clay does not rest only in the processes.Experimenting with clay mixtures, forming the bodies, expressing your artistic vision through your finishes â€" sgraffito and underglazes, applyin g Terra Sigillata...In short, there is nothing clinical about ceramic arts. It is all about skill and passion, vision and creation and, yes, processes.Whether you want to take up pottery for its therapeutic benefits â€" yes, there are many, or to express your artistic side, London certainly has a pottery class for you.Come with your Superprof now to discover the best ones. That is perfectly understandable.Would you really sacrifice pottery-making simply because you have no inclination to get a bit grubby? Well, maybe if you knew a bit more about clay pottery...It is in that spirit of understanding that Parade Mews offers their taster sessions. You are invited to try handbuilding â€" working off a slab of clay and then coiling and pinching it into shape, much as you would with modelling clay or throwing a pot, the messy version that incorporates a potter’s wheel.Either way, you would be treated to refreshments and, even better: you get to keep two of the pieces you made. After such a two-hour session, if you decide you would like to learn more about ceramics, you are welcome to sign up for any of their adult classes; they also hav e kids’ classes after school for children as young as seven. For hen/stag parties, special events; even for students taking art classes at university, Parade Mews has something for everyone.Unlike Birmingham, London does not have a long history of ceramics works but Parade Mews comes very close to establishing this city as an important contributor to ceramic art.Shirley Stewart Pottery CoursesLondon is dotted with many architectural gems, one of them being the Lewisham Arthouse. If they’re really brave (and have the right insurance), they teach kids classes, too.The Co-op is just such a pottery studio. They have the perfect blend of visual artists who are all keen to impart their knowledge to anyone interested in any facet of pottery-making.For instance, if you have a fair grasp of throwing, you may want to learn more about selecting and operating an electric kiln or learning how to use a raku kiln. The Co-op offers such courses, along with pottery painting workshops, glazing workshops and, yes, even the elementary wheel throwing workshops.By contrast, most ceramics class es in Leeds mostly revolve around painting and drawing on ceramics with little pottery-making involved...The Clay RoomWhat started out as an independent artist’s studio has turned into a new, major space for sharing the love of art and the joy of creation with as many as possible. The quartet of ceramists that staff the Clay Room did not come to the discipline in the traditional way; meaning that they did not know from an early age that ceramic sculpture was their life’s calling and go on to incur substantial debt to pay for their art education.Well, except for maybe Krista. The fact that most of the instructors at the Room came to clay in the same way you have, curious and willing to learn, makes them perhaps the best teachers for learning how to make pottery for those who are yet uncertain that clay sculpture is for them. You might try their throwing taster just to see how things work out and, if all goes well, you may even settle on the family-friendly course that is due to star t soon.Other offerings include clay taster workshops, when you would get to sample both wheel throwing and clay sculpting, slip casting and mould-making courses (a fun and easy way to make holiday ornaments!) or an all-out, ‘teach me everything!’ pottery class.Their new studio is only about 40 minutes outside of London city centre but so well worth the trip...The Midlands, especially Manchester is a location rich in ceramic materials that continue to be worked today. If you’re there to learn about clay arts, you will inevitably learn about clay â€" not just what you can do with it.Exploring all of the art studios in and around London, we find that ceramic artists all have one particular trait in common. They have a passion to beautify the earth one piece of pottery at a time. The fact that they do so with the most elemental materials â€" earth, water and fire makes their art somehow seem so forthright and so pure.Doesn’t that make you want to learn what pottery art is all about? No need to search the web for ‘pottery classes near me’, Superprof makes your life easier with this handy list of London pottery classes.Pottery Classes in LondonStudio NamePhysical AddressPhone NumberWeb AddressParade Mews Pottery7 Parade Mews Norwood Road, London SE27 9AX0208 678 1686www.parademewspottery.co.ukShirley Stewart Lewisham Arthouse140 Lewisham Way London SE14 6PD0208 692 2513www.shirleystewart.co.ukC eramics Studio Coop Units 14C, 16C, 17CJuno Way, London London SE14 5RW0208 691 6421www.ceramicsstudio.coopThe Clay RoomV22 Priory, Church Hill, Orpington, BR6 0HH0793 810 2062www.theclayroomuk.comCrown Works Pottery11 Crown Works Temple Street London E2 6QQ0777 415 5703www.crownworkspottery.comSkandiHus Pottery90 De Beauvoir Road London N1 4EN0778 987 4147www.skandihus.co.ukTurning Earth E1011 Argall Ave, Walthamstow, London E10 7QE0203 325 1912www.turningearth.org/e10Clay Time168 Blackstock Road London N5 1HA0203 441 8787www.claytime.london
